background story
The Spurs have been in San Antonio since 1973, when they were still in the ABA, and started playing at the AT&T Center when it opened in 2002. They are contractually bound as tenants to their current arena until 2032.
Spurs chief counsel Bobby Perez previously told Bexar County commissioners that the team wanted to amend their agreement with the county so it could play as the home team in Mexico City and the Alamo Dome during the 2022-23 season, and two races in Austin, less than 100 miles from its home. The Spurs are celebrating their 50th anniversary and wanted to play at the Alamo Dome in honor of their 1999 championship there.
What is it like in the building?
to spread; to spread. loudly. Dome-like top four environment. The perspective of most fans is not ideal. But the Spurs marketed the hell tonight, deliberately picking the Warriors as a strong brand opponent and capable of attracting record crowds despite being one of the worst teams in the NBA.
There is also a nostalgic side. The Spurs used to play at the Alamo Dome. This is where they won their first title in 1999. Steve Kerr was actually on that team. They’ve been showing retro footage to the crowd during the timeout and announcing franchise legends to the crowd. Kerr and Avery Johnson have already received rapturous applause. Becky Harmon and Tony Parker were also announced. Manu Ginobili is in the building, may announce later. — Slater
