Administrative means, UEFA has agreed that all clubs with the same owners or shareholders will participate in next season’s European Cup.
UEFA has already lost a battle in its ambition to solve the problem of multiple ownership of European clubs. More and more clubs were taken over by the same owners, creating empires that could threaten the fairness of the game. This is why European institutions have so far banned teams from the same major shareholder from participating in the European Championships. The existence of Toulouse is therefore questioned because it is known that Toulouse is the property of Redbird Capital Partners as the main shareholder, just like AC Milan. Aston Villa and Victoria’s Egyptian boss Nassef Sawiris is facing the same problem, as is Brighton and Tony Bloom’s Saint Gilloise Union. But UEFA said on Friday that finally all these beauties could play in European competitions without hesitation, thanks to an administrative change that convinced the European body.
UEFA satisfied with administrative reforms
” The CFCB tribunal has accepted the aforementioned clubs into the UEFA club competition for the 2023/24 season following the implementation of major changes by the clubs and their investors. The CFCB believes that the significant changes implemented enable clubs to comply with the rules governing club timeshares. More specifically, the significant changes that have taken place relate to the ownership structure, governance and financing of the clubs involved. These changes greatly limit the influence and decision-making power of investors over multiple clubs, ensuring that the rules regarding fractional ownership of clubs are respected., delivered to UEFA, guarantees are sufficient as long as no club of the same owner or shareholder has a manager involved in multiple clubs at the same time. There is no direct impact and the loosening of the rules suggests UEFA will struggle to complete the fight, opening the door to ambitious takeovers of European clubs by the same shareholders, much as Qatar has sought to buy Manchester United in addition to its involvement with Paris Saint-Germain.
