With 1:51 left, the 49ers responded with a 34-yard Ray Wersching sneaker for a six-point lead. The first and only Joe Montana vs. Steve Young game was a must-see TV show when it aired, and it was all “Joe Cool.” Montana pitched two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, while Young was fired four times, pitched two picks, and had a turnover. San Francisco receiver John Taylor missed the team’s final ball and Kansas City recovered and won 24-17. “I learn from the masters,” Yang said after the game. “Master has more students to teach today.” Young people will learn quickly. The 49ers coalesced into a team after a few games and went on to win Super Bowl XXIX while Montana retired at the end of the season.
